St. Vincent's Family Medicine Residency Program
Welcome to St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Jacksonville, Florida! As one of the premier Family Medicine Residencies in Florida, we offer excellent education and the opportunity to live a family-friendly lifestyle. The St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Center, the residency program practice, has nearly 38,000 office visits annually, along with 400 obstetrical deliveries and 2,000 hospital admissions from our practice. We are also a key provider of Pediatric care in the community, with 6,000 pediatric office visits each year.
Our program has been fully accredited by the ACGME since 1972, also has the additional accreditation for Osteopathic Recognition. Both MD and DO residents train side-by-side which creates unique and valuable learning opportunities, with a structured curriculum to allow DO residents to continue developing advanced OMT skills. In addition to experienced Family Medicine physicians, our core faculty also includes Obstetricians, Pediatrician, Dermatologist, Clinical Psychologist, Geriatrician, and Clinical Pharmacist. This, along with our innovative schedule and ample elective time, provides training that allows our graduates to practice full-spectrum family medicine upon graduation.

A message from our Program Director
The St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program exists for two reasons — to provide superior education and training for family medicine residents and to give our patients the best possible medical care. We prepare our residents to succeed in the practice locations they will eventually choose, from urban to rural, and to be ready for leadership roles in their communities. St. Vincent’s has graduated skilled, successful, compassionate physicians since the program began in 1972. I believe the key to our success is the commitment of our faculty and staff to excellence in education and patient care. The faculty members devote substantial time to enhancing their own teaching skills and are dedicated to helping residents grow professionally and personally into fine family physicians.
The residency program benefits from affiliations with Ascension, Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Florida State University, Nova Southeastern University and the University of Florida. In addition to Family Medicine faculty, the program has full time faculty in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN Clinical Psychology, Pathology and Dermatology. Our faculty has a wide range of interests from Hospital Medicine to Integrative Medicine, which allows our residents to take advantage of superb educational opportunities and further refine their own professional goals.
You are about to make a decision that will influence the rest of your life. I hope this information about our program will help you discover the atmosphere of teamwork and professionalism we strive to create. I invite you to consider training at the St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program.

About the Program
St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program was established in 1972 and accepts ten residents per year for the three-year program. The residency is accredited by the Family Medicine Residency Review Committee and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The program has also been awarded Osteopathic Recognition accreditation by the ACGME for our optional Osteopathic Track. Physicians who complete the Osteopathic track are eligible for both the ABFM and the AOBFP board certification upon graduation. Our program encourages residents to pursue an Area of Concentration(AOC) during the last two years of the program, allowing the development of advanced skills in an area of particular interest to the resident and valuable to their future careers. Advanced Obstetrics, Sports Medicine, Palliative/Hospice Medicine and Hospital Medicine are some examples of completed AOC’s.
The Family Medicine Residency Program is part of St. Vincent’s HealthCare, which was founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1916. St. Vincent’s HealthCare is a member of Ascension, which is the nation’s largest nonprofit health system. Today St. Vincent’s consists of three hospitals (Riverside, Southside and Clay County), urgent care centers, ambulatory centers and a Medical Group of over 300 providers in Primary Care and Specialty Care practices. The Family Medicine Center is responsible for more than 38,000 office visits per year.
The program emphasizes continuity and full-spectrum care and is designed to develop critical clinical skills and decision making abilities. The residency embraces evidence based medicine and has had a fully implemented EMR since 2006. The program is staffed by fifteen full-time faculty physicians who are dedicated to resident education. This faculty includes Family Physicians with areas of special interest such obstetrics, manual therapy, geriatrics, practice management, sports medicine, nutrition, medical informatics, hospital medicine and infertility as well as specialists boarded in OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Clinical Psychology and Dermatology. This unique blend allows for comprehensive training and development of the personal interests of residents. Extra training in obstetrics and perinatology is available through the OB Track (AOC). Required subspecialty and elective rotations can be completed with a wide variety of specialists at St. Vincent’s Riverside and other area hospitals who are also dedicated to the education of family physicians.

The Family Medicine Center is located across from St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside and is the focal point of the residency program. The Family Medicine Center simulates a private family medicine office where we provide care for a balanced population of private pay, managed care and indigent patients. It is one of the main vehicles by which St. Vincent's fulfills its Mission of compassionate, accessible medical care for all patients in Jacksonville and the surrounding areas.
The Family Medicine Center is a 30,000 square-foot building including 36 exam rooms and a laboratory. There are four well-equipped procedure rooms available for dermatologic procedures, colposcopy and other procedures. When performing procedures there is appropriate faculty supervision. Monitoring and constructive feedback assures and promotes sound medical knowledge and clinical skills. The Family Medicine Center also has an ultrasound room, two preceptor work areas, faculty offices, resident work areas, conference rooms and business office space.
While in the Family Medicine Center, residents gain experience in the concepts and principles of family medicine and ambulatory care. Residents provide care for their assigned families, exposing each physician to a wide spectrum of chronic illnesses, acute problems and health maintenance issues throughout their training. Emphasis is placed on continuity of care and the doctor-patient relationship as crucial factors in the art of healing.
